Adding videos to the site

Since my recent issue with youtube and me signing up with blip.tv, I thought I would incorporate those videos into my website. I really like the player and the quality’s good too(once you sign up and become a “Pro” member). Now this is obviously a huge undertaking, to give an idea what I’m dealing with; roughly 3000 videos with a total length of nearly a month spread out over 50 completed let’s plays. The total space they’re taking up is 1.8TB.

Because of the sheer volume of these videos and me having to re-render them to fit for blip.tv this’ll be a process that will take a multiple of months. Therefore I’ll be picking some easy/shorter games first to get those up and give me an idea on what the videos page is going to look like with many more games being added over time.

You may have noticed that I’ve added a “Videos” link on the main navigation bar, this’ll take you to the page where there is a (for now, small) overview of games which when clicked will lead you to the game’s page with the playlists. I’m currently thinking about how to best organize said videos and it is likely that this will change over time, but the main idea will likely stay the same; give a good alternative to youtube and make it friendly to navigate.

Any ideas or suggestions are of course welcome.

  • Cool. – As far as ideas on how to organize the videos, I’m not totally sure.. Since this is just a list of your own LP’s and it’s separate from You Tube it might be nice to take advantage of being able to use your own tags. On the other hand since people searching your list can be assumed to have already discovered you, it might be simpler to provide a list of games alphabetically.

Maybe a two tiered system would work best. A “recent” list which would cover the most current game(s), so frequent visitors would have a easy way to get to the newest content, and a list of titles alphabetically for browsing the full catalog. If you wanted to go all out then you could tag games by genre, date of release, and date of recording or even popularity..

I suppose the best answer would be to emulate how successful online retailers advertise and organize their titles. Usually a splash screen with the hot new items and then a system for finding particular titles.

  • Hmm, I think I like the sound of the 2-tiered approach.

I Could maybe keep track of the last 3 sets/playlists that had been updated or perhaps have a list of “Ongoing” let’s plays along with that. And then divide them up by category, I’m not sure a alphabetical list would be that great.

I guess that means I should aim to get my current lp’s up there first then. Still working on getting Aquaria up for now, then I’ll start working on current stuff.
